As the sounds emanating from London continue to morph faster than people like us can slap a proper genre name on them, and the number of producers and DJs involved in this funky/garage/bass music movement continues to grow, it seems like there are very few constants in the UK's electronic music scene. As a result, a label like Hyperdub—which has only been around for a shade over five years—serves as a pillar of stability, even as its roster and sonic output exist in a state of semi-permanent flux. So when Ikonika (a.k.a. Sara Abdel-Hamid) dropped Contact, Love, Want, Have, her debut album and one of only a handful of full-length efforts on Hyperdub (the others belonging to Burial and label head Kode9), it qualified as a genuine big deal. Later this month, Ikonika will be following up that big deal with another big adventure—a brief North American tour that includes a stop at this year's MUTEK festival. In the meantime, she's put together this exclusive XLR8R podcast that was mixed live and includes all kinds of dubplates and unreleased goodies. Philly's purveyor of "street bass" mixes it up on this week's RA podcast.

When you think of grime and dubstep, Pennsylvania isn't one of the the first places that springs to mind, but Paul Geissinger AKA Starkey has been doing his utmost to create his own take on the sound in his home city of Philadelphia. Having been turned on to UK garage while he was studying in London at the start of the millennium, he continued to keep abreast of developments in the scene once he got back to the US. Alongside his Seclusiasis partner Dev79, he helped to promote the first party in the US to feature grime music before launching into the production sphere with singles on Werk, Lo Dubs and Dead Homies.

It wasn't long before Planet Mu got wind of his energetic and colourful mix of instrumental hip-hop and dubstep, and 2008 saw him gain plenty of exposure with the release of his Ephemeral Exhibits album on the label as well as an appearance on Mary Anne Hobbs' much discussed Generation Bass showcase. This month sees follow-up Ear Drums & Black Holes hit the shops, with RA's Oli Marlow citing itto be "equally as able to appease personal musing or excite your limbs with spectacular effect." As such, we thought that we'd get him in to demonstrate what his self-coined "street bass" sound is all about.

What have you been up to recently?

I'm always working on music. Doing a bunch of different things. I'm mixing a couple tracks for the Drums of Death album on Greco-Roman, mastering some Seclusiasis and Slit Jockey releases, working on some new Starkey demos and just keeping busy really. Got a bunch of shows coming up this month, so I'm trying to get some music together for those, plus I'm a teacher, so it's nearing the end of the semester and I've got a lot of stuff to grade.

How and where did you record the mix?

I recorded the mix at my studio, The Royal Bank of Starkville. I did it using Serato live, then added in the skit at the beginning and all the sound effects after the fact.

Can you tell us a little bit about the mix?

Yeah, it's kind of a snapshot of where I'm at musically right now. However, I've been doing a bunch of mixes for the release of the album, so I always try to approach each one in a slightly different way to make them unique. For this particular mix I varied up the tempo a bit... starting in the 140 grime/dubstep range and then moving to the 80bpm hiphop-ish range, and then back again. That's kind of the form that most of my recent DJ sets have taken on, so I thought it would be nice to showcase that.

How are your midweek Who Run It?! parties going back in Philly? Are you finding that having a reputation back in Europe having much of an effect on the scene back home?

Well, Dev79 just started throwing Who Run It?! on a regular rotation last month. Before that it was kind of erratic, but we've been doing events in Philly for years of course, and it's always a bit hit or miss with this city. I mean, we have a core group of people that come out to the events we're doing, or I'm playing, many of whom have been down for years. But everything in Philly always has to have a big promotional push, lots of flyers, a good web presence, and you just hope that people leave their house and come out.

You're quite the energetic character behind the decks. Do you think that having a stage presence and personality is something that's often forgotten when it comes to dance music?

For me, it's just natural. I love playing my music in clubs, so I get into it. For some people, the whole stoic DJ behind the decks thing works, and that's how they wish to express themselves, but that's never worked for me. Plus, my sets, for the average club goer, seem to be a bit more challenging and less immediate. I vary up the music a lot, mixing dubstep, grime, hip-hop, etc... and that throws some people off. You have to move a bit differently I guess. And the whole "Starkey" image, the story... with the skits and all that, my press photos, they're just an extension of who I am and my interests. I like to have fun with everything. There's an added dimension for people who are into my music. I'm not just another guy making electronic music. I mean, sometimes people even refer to me as Starkbot, and that's cool. They get it.

What are you up to next?

Release-wise I've got remixes for Foals and Innerpartysystem dropping very soon. They're both on 7-inches. Then I'm doing an EP on Civil Music for the fall. I'm really interested in doing more production for hip-hop and R&B artists as well. I love working with vocals, so I'm gonna keep trying to further my output in that direction.

29 Minutes of Guido

On Friday 3rd July Numbers celebrates its 6th Birthday party at Glasgow’s Sub Club. For this years celebrations we decided to mix up the old and new; so we’ve invited over one of our greatest influences and two of our most recent discoveries for a party of epic proportions.
MMM First up from Berlin is the massively influential MMM aka Erik & Fiedel. Erik is mostly known these days for his Errorsmith project and for being one half of Smith ‘N’ Hack, while Fiedel is a resident at the world famous Berghain in Berlin. These guys were responsible for the Donna Summer sampling techno classic ‘Donna’; a tune that just refuses to die. We first heard Donna in the late 90’s and it’s a tune that has stuck with us ever since. Over the years Errorsmith has a become regular guest at the club and for one of our Brunswick Hotel parties he decided to reactivate MMM for their first ever live show. This then morphed in to a legendary ten years of MMM party at Berghain… it’s about time we unleashed this beast at the Sub Club.
Gemmy & Guido Representing the new school are rising Dubstep stars Gemmy & Guido. With Glasgow and Bristol being at the forefront of Britain’s electronic music scene right now we just had to invite our Bristolian cousins up for their Glasgow debut. Alongside former Numbers guest Joker they form part of the hailed Purple Trinity, famed for their take on Dubstep that sidesteps the stereotypical wobblers in favour of Prince, Dr Dre, G-Funk and modern day R&B influences like the Neptunes and Danja, with Guido recently being touted as the British answer to Timbaland by The Wire writer Joe Muggs. Their music can be found on Bristol label Punch Drunk and the famed electronica label Planet Mu.
Numbers. Now in to its 6th year, Numbers is a collective of record labels, designers, writers, DJs and producers. The club was rated among the top 2 clubs in the UK and “one of the coolest clubs in the world” by Mixmag and the focus of their recent 4 page spread on Glasgow. This last year has seen the Numbers crew up the ante with our DJ’s releasing records and performing all over Europe whilst our in house labels Stuffrecords and Wireblock have dominated the UK’s electronic music scene. Expect some big announcements ahead as we prepare to do something very special with these labels.

"Своим миксом я хотел показать всю гамму и разнообразие такого модного нынче жанра, как wonky.

Вспоминая о контрастах и цветах, можно было бы назвать микс знакомым всем словосочетанием: "United Colour of Wonky", в котором можно встретить абсолютно зеленую Tokimonsta и матерого грозного Flying Lotus, сияние Gold Panda и марево ностальгии от Daedelus. Не используя какие-то определенные тенденции, решил передать настроение и возможности нового жанра, в котором мрачный бит легко себя чувствует с отголосками джаза, умиротворенным настроением блюза, промелькнет тень дабстепа или даже позовет с собой на оклоземную орбиту космический синтипоп.

Во время создания микса, я все время держал в голове один образ - подготовка к какому-либо шумному семейному застолью, или даже пиршеству на сто человек. Особенно та его часть - где готовится еда для всех гостей, на кухне у заботливой хозяйки, где кастрюль больше чем комфорок на плите, и что-то само чистится, жарится, парится, все бурлит, кипит, пряности пересыпаются из одной чаши в другую, чудесный запах любимых яств и ожидание праздника и родных любимых лиц. Хозяйка бегает между приборами, достигая второй космической скорости, успевая нарезать лук и отшугнуть кота, который чуть было не вытащил размороженную рыбу из раковины.

В других комнатах украшают стол, завязывают салфетки особым хитрым способом, носят стулья - повсюду гам и суета.

Благодаря своему сладковатому звучанию, этот вид абстрактного хип-хопа может быстро приесться и вызвать оскомину, поэтому необходимо употреблять его в малых дозах 3 раза каждый день после еды, с крепким чаем."

ох как я подсел на ambient.

созерцание и размышления.

именно такой, не слишком электронный ambient, помогает мне расслабиться и не режет слух лишними электронными звуками.

обволакивающий и успокаивающий.

"Минуя всякие рассуждения, о том, насколько известен этот музыкант и как любители эмбиента ждали новый релиз одного из достаточно авторитетных и хорошо зарекомендовавших себя лейблов - Serein - перейду сразу к сути вопроса.

Звук Retold построен на трех инструментах: фортепьяно, скрипка и виолончель. Nest с первого же аккорда первого же трека буквально оглушает слушателя невероятно плотным эмоциональным ливнем. В очередной раз остается только удивляться, как простая фортепьянная тема может настолько искренне и глубоко волновать душу. Ливень - отличное сравнение. Каждый аккорд, взят он на скрипке или фортепьяно, похож на отдельные капли дождя, которые, как при замедленной съемке, белой нитью со свистом тссссссып пронзают густо пахнущий воздух, расплющиваются об асфальт и прозрачной струйкой, обрамленной по краям водяным веером, возрождаются, колышась, над поверхностью.

Первые шесть треков - это та грань, где хочется провести разделение между двумя частями, из которых, как бы, состоит альбом, уверяю вас, эти первые шесть треков даже камень заставят плакать. А капельки с его серой шершавой кривой поверхности будут скатываться ровно так, как звучит заглавная тема этих треков. Удивительное ощущение ностальгии, сопричастности, благородной печали и грусти пронизывает всю ткань первой части альбома. Собственно, эти шесть треков мы могли услышать и на альбоме 2007 года c одноименным названием Nest.

Что же касается второй части - новых треков, которые все так ждали? Сразу же можно сказать, что они вышли несколько отчужденными, отдаленными от атмосферы предыдущих - никак не назвать их продолжением темы. Они более разряженные, жидкие, в них больше воздуха. Уже не звучит, почти, отголосков темы первой части, зато безраздельно царствуют долгие протяжные раскаты, затерявшиеся в тумане эхо. Вторая часть, говоря вкратце, обескураживает - то сильнейшее эмоциональное наполнение, которое было в первой части не то что ушло - его как будто не было и в помине. Вторая часть Retold - мечтательный, но заезженный эмбиент, какой попадается на каждом углу, и которой лишен всяческой индивидуальности. Согласиться с этим или нет - решать вам. "

Новый альбом канадского музыканта Скотта Моргана, более известного как «Loscil», начинается и заканчивается шумом дождя — разумеется, это не самое важное, что есть на пластинке «Endless Falls». Скорее звуки льющейся с небес воды должны обозначить особое, меланхолично-созерцательное настроение этой музыки. Музыки, такой же простой, и такой же незаменимой, как теплый шерстяной плед и чашка горячего чая в промозглую погоду. «Endless Falls», кажется, типично «канадский эмбиент», в компании с которым можно сидеть дома, дышать свежим воздухом, ходить по лесу, смотреть на звездное небо, мечтать и ничего не делать.

Для создания своих композиций Морган использует дрейфующие теплые волны электронного звука, имеющие порой «симфоническое» звучание, обозначает щелчками, шорохами, хрустом и гулкими дабовыми пульсациями неторопливый ритм, придающий эфемерным мелодиям некую осязаемость, не забывая при этом, что подобную музыку в наши дни сочиняет множество людей, вооруженных лэптопом — и, чтобы вырваться из их круга, канадец спешит украсить композиции плачущей «живой» скрипкой и задумчивым фортепиано, в то же время трансформируя пение флейты в обволакивающий гул. Складывая слой за слоем и добавляя все новые и новые элементы, Скотт добивается того, чтобы каждый трек находился в постоянном движении, дышал и развивался, ни на секунду не зависая в воздухе бесформенной, аморфной субстанцией. На самой середине «Endless Falls» слегка «темнеет», олицетворяя ночные часы, на протяжении которых с неба непрерывно падают звезды, а заключительная вещь «The Making of Grief Point», помимо того, что в ней впервые в истории «Loscil» используется голос (один из друзей музыканта наговаривает какой-то странный и длинный текст), звучит весьма жестко и напористо, вторгаясь в личное пространство слушателя цикличными сэмплами, пульсациями баса и обозначенным при помощи цифрового мусора ритмом. Кончится все, как уже сообщалось выше, проливным дождем, который не способен смыть невыразимо приятное ощущение от прослушивания этого диска. Практически безупречная работа.

He explains how this mix came about along with where he’s been and where he plans on going. > How did you get started in making dubstep?

I had been producing Hip-hop for about 6 months when I first heard Dubstep. It instantly hooked me because it sounded like a perfect blend between my 3 favorite genres: Hip-hop, DnB and IDM. I tried making a dubstep track, and after that I’ve been doing nothing else but making dubstep for the last year.

> What was the first dubstep song you heard?

I think it’s Vex’d – Thunder, still one of my favorite tunes. I’m not 100% sure about that though.

> What gear/software are you using?

Back in the day when I switched from hip-hop to dubstep and I used an Akai MPC2000xl and Clavia Nord Rack, but since it’s really hard to make good Dubstep with just hardware. I’ve switched to Fruity Loops and I have been working with Cubase a few weeks ago for a new project, and I must say I’m very impressed with that program, so I’ll probably start working with that more in the future.

> Why does dubstep stand out from all the other genres, in your opinion?

In my opinion Dubstep combines the flow of hip-hop, the energy of DnB and the creativity of IDM and turns it into one great genre. It’s also a genre you can do a lot with. Basically you can call anything with a heavy bass and a BPM around 140 Dubstep. I’ve made tracks influenced by Funk, Metal, Hardcore and Pop, and I still have a lot more ideas for directions I can take tunes in.

> How did the idea for Cheesestep come about?

Well I’ve been mixing an internet radioshow weekly at AfterDarkRadio.Info (Friday’s from 2200-2400 GMT) and one time for fun, I put in “cheesy time”. I had just gotten a bunch of dubstep remixes of pop songs from some producers I share tunes with, and I wanted to test them out. While I thought people in the chatbox would hate it (to be honest I was a bit drunk and wanted to mess with the listeners a bit) they actually really liked what I played. So I decided to make a mixtape with only dubstep remixes of popsongs. As you can see in the name and the artwork of the mix, it’s all for fun, because in my opinion there’s a lot of people who take dubstep way too serious.

> How would you describe your sound?

That’s a really hard question, I don’t think anyone can really put the finger on their own sound, and besides that, I’m constantly evolving my sound. Flow is very important in my songs though, and I like my songs to have a different angle then what people normally expect in a dubstep song.

> What dubstep artists are you currently listening to?

I’m really impressed with the sounds that are currently coming from Israel. I went to Jerusalem a few weeks ago to play 2 gigs and work on some tunes with Sticky Feet, and it is bursting with talent over there. Everyone should know Borgore by now, but other really good producers from Israel include Tomba, Sticky Feet, WhiskerTwister and Bunny On Acid.

Other artists I’m currently feeling a lot are Bukez Finezt, fellow dutchman Devnik, and Claw (also Hulk). Also showing some great potential for the future are Davr and Oddsokz.

> Plans for the future?

Plenty! I’ve got a lot of releases planned for this year, including an 4-track EP on Dub Frequency, an 4-track EP on Dubline, and an 4-track EP together with Sticky Feet. Also my first Vinyl release should be out in the summer on Dub Frequency. With DJ’ing I hope to go to more countries in Europe to play, there’s nothing I like more then to DJ, and seeing a crowd go nuts on a track you just finished is amazing.
